Looking for new ways to support young bilingual children in your classroom? Need help distinguishing language disorders from typical bilingual/second language development? Ready to improve the literacy of the English language learners in your school? Then choose one or two of these half-day seminars to meet your needs!
Seminar 1: Growing up Bilingual
Discover what the research says about children who grow up learning two languages simultaneously – both children from minority (e.g., Spanish) and children from majority (e.g., English) language backgrounds. Through this non-technical research review, you’ll understand what we know about childhood bilingualism, what you can expect as the language development of bilingual children progresses, and what conditions are necessary for children to learn two languages successfully.
Seminar 2: Identifying Bilingual and Second Language Children with Special Language Learning Needs
Get the knowledge and insight you need to help monolingual, bilingual, and second language learners with impaired language learning abilities. You’ll examine typical patterns of language acquisition and learn to distinguish them from indicators of impaired development.
Seminar 3: Literacy Development in English Language Learners
Review findings from research conducted during the past 20 years on the literacy development of English language learners in the
U.S.
You’ll identify similarities and differences between the literacy development of English language learners and that of monolingual English speakers. The seminar will illustrate these similarities and differences with specific examples and make recommendations for literacy practices in school and at home.
Seminar 4: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Dual Language Education
Learn about alternative models of dual language education for majority and minority language students, the effectiveness of such programs, their suitability for students at-risk, and both professional and pedagogical implications of such programs. With this seminar, educators, policy makers, and parents will better understand the possibilities and limitations of dual language education and the conditions (in school and at home) that foster language, academic, and social development.
